BANKS AND CURRENCY

From Tuesday 1st January 2008 the Euro became legal tender, replacing the Cyprus pound (CY£). . From the 31st January 2008 the Cyprus pound is no longer be legal tender.

SHOPPING AND BUSINESS HOURS

In the summer months a siesta period is observed from mid June till the end of September. Opening hours during this time are approximately 8am till 1pm and 4pm till 8pm Monday - Friday. Most shops are closed Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, except those in the tourist areas, but you will find everything you need in the local ‘periptero' (kiosks that stay open until late selling everything you could need).

POST OFFICES

Post Offices are open from 8am-1pm Monday till Friday. Main Post offices in the towns are open in the afternoons from 3-6pm and from 9-11 on Saturday mornings.

TIME

Local Time is 2 hours ahead of GMT, except during Cyprus summertime.

220/240 Volts AC 50Hz. 13 amp, UK standard square pin sockets.

WATER

Cyprus tap water is safe to drink, and there are no water-born diseases, however it is important not to waste water. Local and imported mineral water can be bought at reasonable prices from kiosks and supermarkets.

MEDIA

Currently there are three English language newspapers published: Cyprus Mail, Cyprus Weekly and Financial Mirror.

Television programmes are mainly in Greek, but a variety of imported European and American Films and soaps are shown with Greek subtitles.

There is also a daily news bulletin in English on the CYBC station-PIK2

As well as the BBC world service and British forces radio there are also local stations broadcasting in English including: Radio Napa 106.3FM and 91.4 coast FM.

Satellite television is available in Cyprus, providing the same range of services as in the UK
