This area is extremely popular with Brits looking for a refined and quiet location for retirement or holidays. NERJA itself lies between beach coves surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. There are two main areas of population, the town of Nerja itself and the little hamlet of Maro. At the entrance there is a statue, which was set up to commemorate Spain's entry to the EC. At the southern end of Nerja the famous Balcón de Europa hangs over the sea offering an amazing viewpoint.

Not to be missed are Nerja’s caves, located one kilometre inland these huge caves lay undiscovered for thousands of years. Now the caves, which are the third most visited monument in Spain, host music and dance festivals. In the winter pot holing is practiced in organised groups. The town offers an excellent range of leisure facilities, for example, fishing, diving, water-skiing, hiking, horse riding and jeep safaris. In the older quarter of the town you will find traditional shops selling local craftwork and produce including sweet wine and olive oil. There are 9km of beaches including the famous Burriana beach.
Inland from Nerja is FRIGILIANA in the eastern part of the Axarquía region, on the southern slopes of the mountains. The town has a special microclimate with an average annual temperature of 18°C, so the winters are mild and the summers warm. The upper part of the village is formed by an intricate layout of steep, narrow, cobbled streets giving the area an atmosphere of Spanish tradition. From these winding streets wonderful views over orchards and the coast can be enjoyed. There is a lot of history to the town dating back as far as 3,000 B.C.; the town has a number of monuments and archaeological sites to tell the stories. The town is growing as tourism increases with more and more local shops and restaurants appearing.

Returning to the coast we next come to TORROX, which has all the enchantment and magic of the white Andalusian villages, and the ideal conditions to enjoy the sun and the sea on the Mediterranean coast. Torrox offers nine kilometers of fine sand ideal for sunbathers. The town has numerous bars, restaurants, local craftwork shops, leisure areas and sports facilities to keep people of all ages occupied.
There is fascinating history attached to Torrox and the town centre is exceptionally rich in historic architecture. The town dates back to the 1st Century A.D. when the Phoenicians settled followed by the Roman occupation.
The festivals celebrated in Torrox are just one of the reasons to visit. Torrox has a busy festive calendar all year round with the most important festival starting in October. During the festivals food and wine from the area is tasted while there is music and dance in the streets.
