TORRE DEL MAR is the beach resort of Velez-Malega the capital city of the Axarquía region. It benefits from an attractive promenade leading to a marina. Situated on the coast 18 miles east of Malaga. This one of the quieter tourist resorts, yet still enjoys the quality of hotels, bars and restaurants found in more touristy resorts. There is a rich gastronomy, like fish and tortillas (Spanish potato omelettes) It has 3 miles of golden sandy beaches with beach bars, discos, sports boats and a fishing port where fresh catch is landed daily. For the young of heart there is an aquatic park with all the usual attractions.

El Torre Del Mar

Inland from Torre del Mar are three or four interesting small villages where property is not grand but is very reasonably priced and not part of any urban developments. One of these is ARENAS. As you approach Arenas there is an ancient olive mill and a mural made by the prestigious ceramist Virgilio González at the entrance to the town. The town is 416 metres above sea level and from any location you are close to the hill of Bentomiz, from which you there are magnificent views of the coastline and across the Mediterranean to Africa.

The centre itself is made up of narrow and winding streets, plazas and traditional style buildings. In the area where the more up market properties is the Town hall and the square containing the 12th century Church.

Festivals play a large part in the Arenas way of life, the first starting in February with the carnival. People take to the streets to have fun, dress up and sing songs.

ÁRCHEZ is a small town of about 5km2 made up of narrow streets and closely distributed houses. The town centre is small and flat and as you walk around you see that the design of houses differ from street to street. Árchez is a quiet town, but it fills with the sounds of the market place on Wednesday mornings, when stalls are set up in the Plaza de Andalusia. All types of local produce are sold.

There is an abundance of water in the region; the Sierra Tejeda riverbeds are fed by the River Árchez, along with the numerous tributaries makes it an excellent tourist attraction. Walking along the riverbanks one can see three ancient and abandoned flourmills.

Slightly further inland is LAKE VIÑUELA which is a man made reservoir lying north above Torre del Mar and Velez Malaga, it is only 30 minutes drive from the coast. This lake serves the useful purpose of providing water to thousands of homes as well a providing a relaxing feature in the area. Many attractive new developments are now being built in the area.
